The Haeundae Beach is one of the most popular attractions of Busan and visited by many tourists every summer. It is registered in the Guinness Book of World Records for its more than 10,000 parasols on the beach every summer. Also, it attracted much public attention as Haeundae Beach, a blockbuster film shot against the background of the Haeundae Beach, successfully exceeded the 10 million viewers mark. It has best conditions for sea bathing with the vast sandy beach and shallow water. Also, it is popular as a maritime resort area with skyscrapers, a marina, luxury hotels and shopping malls.
Haeundae Beach History Popular Tourism In Korea
Beach parasols of all colors and shapes, which fill the Haeundae seaside resort during hot summer days, will be listed on the Guinness World Record. This is the place where an estimated maximum of 12,000 parasols
jam-pack the entire beach during the peak summer vacation season of between late July and early August.
Though an unusual scene hardly seen on any other beaches in the world, it has yet to be registered with
the Guinness World Records. An official record was set on Aug. 2. Officials counted the number of parasols set up on the beach every hour between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and the number reached its peak of 7,937
at 4 p.m. to be recognized as a world record.

Korea Record Institute, responsible for registering world records on behalf of Guinness, said it put 40 measurers into the work, who checked the number of parasols lent to vacationers every hour section by section and totalled them all later. The day’s record is scheduled to go into the Guinness World Record in three months. Another world record set on the day was the sand painting with the Haeundae Beach and its parasols as its theme. On Aug. 3, university students majoring in fine arts and public officials took part in the sand painting event held at the Haeundae Elementary School, during which the participants used 1,000 kilograms of colored sand to make a sand painting of 920 square meters, the largest in the world. The previous record in this area was an 859.42-sq. meter work made in Spain on June 13, 2007.

When the beach parasols and sand painting, Korea’s unique seaside resort culture, will be registered
with Guinness World Records, it will serve as an occasion to make Haeundae Beach known all over the world, said an official of the Haeundae District, which organized the event.
